Auburn Harvest Hair Color The red-orange undertones of Auburn Harvest, one of the most sought-after fall hair color trends, are an ideal match for warm skin tones – pale or dark. Auburn’s brownish-red tint will bring out your skin color’s naturally golden hues, giving you a soft, healthy glow. Pumpkin Spice Hair Color Channeling fall’s favorite flavor, pumpkin spice hair color is perfect for light skin with peachy or golden undertones. Think Rachel McAdams with her soft coppery strands and subtle pieces of light, golden blonde. The key is to not add too many blonde highlights, you can go from pumpkin princess to brassy blonde with one too many foils and completely miss the mark. Red Velvet Hair Color Rich and delectable, red velvet is sure to please any sweet toothed, true olive-skinned lady, like Ariana Grande seen left. Don’t worry porcelain complexions, you can have your cake and eat it too – easily adapt this color for cooler skin tones by adding some bluish hues seen right. Plumberry Hair Color Ruby red with jets of violet? Give a warm welcome to Plumberry. This fall 2014 hair color trend is the perfect match for cool or neutral skin tones looking for a dark red hair color. Have a warm skin tone? Save the welcome and steer clear of too much violet in your hair color formula – they tend to make your skin color look yellow and sallow. Black Currant Hair Color For those with black or dark brown hair color, say hello to black currant. This purpley-black hair color compliments cool brunettes looking to add a little or a lot of violet. Adding this color to a soft sombre or reverse ombré, is the optimal way to blend imperial purple with a natural brown hair color. Frosted Chesnut Hair Color Frosted chestnut is a great option for ashy brunettes who want a sunkissed look without the upkeep. Look to your baylayage technique to seamlessly melt chestnut brown with taupe highlights for an effortless fall hair color for brunettes. Note how Kate Beckinsale’s frosted chestnut hair color brings life to her fair skin tone seen left. Salted Caramel Hair Color It wouldn’t be fall without ribbons of caramel highlights frolicking hand-in-hand with a rich, mocha hair color. For brunettes with a warm base and skin tone, shy away from the frosted chestnut, and embrace your hair’s natural shade with these toffee tones. For added dimension, pair subtle copper hues with caramel highlights to brighten the face area. Chocolate Truffle Hair Color Simply irresistible, chocolate hair color can come in different shades, depending which flavor you’re trying to embody. For a warm, milk chocolate color, look to soft copper highlights to add dimension. For dark chocolate, focus on your cool brown shades. Amber Romance Hair Color If you sported a stunning shade of apricot hair color during summer, embrace the idea of amber romance when making the seasonal transition. Amber’s saffron-orange undertones are ideal for gold-laced complexions, and can range from honey hues to bright copper shades. Cool Breeze Blonde Hair Color Remarked for its ashy tones, cool blonde hair color is a breeze for fall. The pairings of dark ash and clear blonde is a popular fall hair color trend for blondes, especially since keeping light hair fresh during winter can be a hassle. To achieve this dimensional appearance, look to your baylayage technique. Icy Platinum Hair Color Meet this winter’s most-sought after hair color – platinum blonde. If you haven’t caught wind of the hoards of celebrities trading in their long locks for a short, platinum crop, let us politely ask, “where have you been?” From Jennifer Lawrence to Miley Cyrus, platinum blonde is a white hot fall hair color trend that can’t be ignored. Bonus points if you take us up on platinum’s icy cousin by eliminating yellow hues and adding a iridescent, silver tint. Primrose Gold Hair Color This fall hair color trend for 2014 will have you blushing. This is winter’s take on the highly desirable, rose gold hair color. Primrose gold embraces more pink and less gold, and can even be paired with a darker root for a fun contrast. Winter Storm Hair Color Gone are the days when grey hair meant your hair color was simply “maturing.” This hair color evokes the stormy grey skies of winter, and may be just what us fair-skinned folks need to embrace some wisdom highlights. Juniper Breeze Hair Color Juniper hair color is sprightly with its delicate tints of pastel blues and greens. You can choose light blue or green as the predominant tone, achieving a spearmint green or baby blue. This is a fresh take on the pastel hair color trend, and is best suited for cooler skin tones. Amethyst Hair Color Winter’s amethyst is a transparent shade of purple, embracing lilac hues. It’s another popular pastel hair color trend seen on celebrities like Nicole Richie and Kelly Osbourne. Trends come and go pretty quickly these days. We are inundated with information from Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and other social media markets. So, how do you sift through and take ownership of the most important trends for summer? Sam Villa to the rescue! We've done the sifting for you, so here's what is hot this summer pun intended. Top Hairstyle and Haircut Trends for Summer 2014 by Andrew Carruthers, Cultural Ambassador for Sam Villa Even though it's summer, lengths are not being cropped quite as short. Perimeters are staying longer and looser to create a feeling of movement. Take the infamous "lob" for an example... This look is still holding strong and the key to owning the look is that perfect lived in texture and grown out perimeter length. Texture is a major part of achieving that perfect summer swing. We are not returning to the late '90s/early 2000's where everything was shredded to a point of pure wispiness. The texture is focused on the mids and ends of the hair and it's done in a way to maintain the density on the interior of the shape. Crop that fringe! Short fringe with vandalized textures are replacing the all popular sweeping fringe as the freshest way to frame your face. How short??? As far as you dare. If a wide shape won't suit your features, cropping out over one eye and leaving a detached area on the opposite side allows you to have both options. Blow dry so that the short side is exposed gives the look drama but if your feeling like you want to sport a softer look, blow dry the long side across to mask the short area. Curls, curls, curls. The good news is that perfect curl is out and loose natural movement is in. Focus on haircuts that relieve weight from the sides and leave a little weight in the ends. The weight in the ends will keep your length from shrinking up and releasing the weight from the sides will allow fullness in the round of the head without creating an afro on the top. "Double Identity" is the term we use instead of versatility and your summer look is going to need to have more identities than a con artist! Long hair is great for creating double identity but all of the stress from restyling can take it's toll on your lovely locks. Keep a regimen of six week trims with your Rapunzels' to keep hair perfectly healthy. Top Hair Color Trends for Summer 2014 by Geneva Cowen, Artistic Director for Sam Villa I love the change of seasons. It opens up the conversation of “what’s next”? Double processed blondes are making a comeback. When you arrive at palest blonde one of my favorite never fail glazes for the perfect platinum is Redken Shades Eq. 1/2oz 09 V Platinum Ice and 1 ½ oz Crystal Clear 2 oz processing solution for 20 minutes. Sun will always expose warm undertones, add Blonde Idol Custom-Tone Conditioner Violet to your retail regime for the perfect cool blonde in between color services. It is my new fave and it flies off the shelf! Blondes may have more fun however this season smokey and neutral brunettes are sexy. To tone down unwanted warmth on level 6 or darker and keep the natural dimension of sun exposure apply equal parts Redken Shades EQ. 06 N and 08 N for 20 minutes. This formula neutralizes warmth and leave the hair glossy and shiny. Soft natural highlights are evident on our beloved celebrities, and Ombre has anchored its way into our color business. However, all hair color drama lives in the tone and contrast. Tone it down. Instead of 4 levels of contrast talk to your guests about a more natural approach that is no more than two levels lighter. As stylists, we have the power to start a color movement in our community. Wherever your creative thought processes takes you as long as it is in good taste, is suitable to our guest’s facial structure and skin tone. If their new color looks great on them it will create a buzz. Make a commitment to offer change to your clientele whether subtle or dramatic. If you put 5 women at a table, within 10 minutes someone will bring up hair or beauty. Your guests love you and want to talk about why you are the best. Give them something to talk about!
She may be young, but Elle Fanning is already ahead of this hair trend. Pantone may have declared Radiant Orchid the color of 2014, but we’re more interested in what the hair color trend will be. Kyle White, the lead colorist at the Oscar Blandi Salon, gave us his predictions for the upcoming year. The Color “Judging by client requests and everything I’ve seen on the red carpet and runways, the it’ color of 2014 is going to be platinum with a capital blonde,” says White, who is Mariah Careys go-to colorist. “Celebrities like Elle Fanning, Miley Cyrus, and even Kim Kardashian are the lightest they’ve ever been. I’m so confident that platinum is going to be a huge trend because I’ve seen this pattern before. First, it was in the fashion shows, then on the celebs, and finally the editors were asking me for it—then, they write about it and voila! It’s happening in every hair salon across America.” The Trend Aside from lighter hair, White says we’ll be seeing more monochromatic color. “I call this power color. It’s hair color like you mean it no in-between shades or wishy-washy tones. It’s in-your-face, strong, solid bright hair color without noticeable highlights.” This new trend in hair color may come as a result of the advancements in color technology. “The new oil based lighteners leave even the palest blondes feeling healthy. These products are 70% oil and deliver results with no burning, itching or even an unpleasant smell.” What’s Out “The color trend I’m seeing less and less of—and I predict will be out in 2014—is pink, blue and other rainbow colors on adult women,” says White. “These hair dyes have very large color molecules which wash out very quickly and look like a faded mess after just a couple of shampoos, which is okay for 13-year-olds, but at 40, not so much.” And while it seems ombré isn’t completely over, it’s definitely transitioning. “Obvious ombré with hard lines and defined rings of lightness is also over. Modern ombré is about having depth at the roots that fade into lighter tips, with subtle gradations and a soft haze between shades.” Are you excited for these 2014 hair trends or not? With the new season comes an exciting development on the hair color front. This Spring marks the welcome return of icy platinum locks, alongside cool brunettes and ashtoned blondes. With ombré firmly out the door, it’s high time you took heed of the new color rules. The only remaining question which color are you brave enough to sport? The Look Ice Cold Platinum The Show Diane Von Furstenberg Spring 2014 RTW The Rundown Popularized by trendsetters like Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, Gwen Stefani, and Rita Ora, whiter than white blonde is back on the beauty radar. The stark silvery finish takes this cult Hollywood hair color into futuristic territory. Ice Cold Platinum Things to Consider UPKEEP this trend requires regular salon visits to keep dark roots at bay. HAIR LENGTH bleach can be harmful to the hair so keep your hair trim in order to avoid frazzled ends. TAKE YOUR TIME to achieve this hair color takes patience—up to four salon visits or several hours in the chair, especially for natural brunettes. A series of color lifting, bleaching, and then toning is vital to get the perfect ice queen crop. TOP TIP don’t wash your hair for at least a couple of days prior to bleaching, as this will help to protect your scalp from feeling like its burning from the strength of the bleach. The Look Cool-Toned Brunette The Show Calvin Klein Spring 2014 RTW The Rundown These are punchy, dark chocolate tresses at their best. No highlights, up lighting, or ombré techniques here; this is clean and sleek color, a million miles away from beachy tresses. Pair with a blunt cut and some shine spray and you’re good to go. Cool-Toned Brunette Things to Consider HAIR CUT this dark raven shade will add the punch to a precision haircut. Opt for one length and a blunt cut. SKIN TONE cool shades complement cool skin tones but this color can look particularly exquisite with olive complexions. MAKE UP with darker strands you may need to amp things up on the makeup front. A flash of bronzer and warm metallic eye shadow is a foolproof combination. TREATMENT opt for a glossing treatment, which helps to restore and nourish the hair while coating it with translucent color. Your strands will be fortified and the cuticles sealed shut, creating a wall of hair that shines like glass. The Look Rose Gold Radiance The Show Gucci Spring 2014 RTW The Rundown This is hair color with the warmth of a sunset bouncing off the strands. An impossibly glossy hue with the warmest undertones. When worn with a wave, it has a dazzling, almost metallic-like shine. Rose Gold Radiance Things to Consider SKINTONE those with a pale complexion ought to go for a more frosty pink, while yellow-toned complexions can take a full-on rose gold color. LEVEL OF QUIRKINESS with Nicole Richie sporting lavender locks and Katy Perry going minty green, this rosy peach can elevate you into rock star territory. This hue will certainly capture your colleagues attention—and if done well, it will be for all the right reasons. MAKE UP with highly pigmented hair, keep to a warm color palette for the rest of your visage. Peach-dusted cheeks and warm metallic eyelids are a good combination. And for a little extra va-va-voom, a bold red lipstick works well at night. The Look Bronde The Show Balmain Spring 2014 RTW The Rundown Not quite blonde yet lighter than a true brunette, the bronde is the latest pantone sported by many a model. Flattering for both warm and cool skin tones, this is a more natural looking hair color. Things to Consider TIME TO ACHIEVE you need to have a consultation to see which color of bronde is best for your skin tone. Your eyebrow color might be something to discuss with your colorist. Dark hair may have to be pre-lightened before coloring, then a series of hand-placed highlights can give a multi-dimensional feel to the look. TECHNIQUE balayage is a coloring technique originating from France, which sees color applied by hand rather than by section with individual foils. It enables the colorist to pinpoint the strands to enhance in order to give a natural, sun-kissed finish to the hair. UPKEEP with no solid line of color, as your hair grows, the effect will only become more natural. Darker at the roots to subtly lifted ends means you won’t have to visit your salon every six weeks. Interested in learning more about this particular look? Read our full guide to getting the Bronde look. The Look Ash Talk The Show Burberry Prorsum Spring 2014 RTW The Rundown With silver/grey hair making a comeback, the trend has trickled down to a really ashy dark blonde. Hair is being toned to give a cool finish that gives a rock-and-roll vibe to long locks. Ash Talk Things to Consider TONE remember that this is not a hair color per se—it’s more of a tone. Therefore, it doesn’t matter whether your hair is light or dark to begin with; an ashy toner will help you to achieve this all-over smoky feel. SKIN QUALITY if you are prone to any hint of redness or rosacea, this is not a hair color option for you. Any visible redness will only be magnified against the soft silvery strands. Only creamy complexions need apply. MAKE UP a punch of color works beautifully with an ashy hair color. Stock up on bright lipsticks and nail varnish and always have a mascara wand at hand to stop you from looking washed out, as this look can cause that effect for pallid skin tones.
